RS Staff Deepen Understanding of Coral Reefs and Mangrove Habitats (Team-building Exercise)

In an effort to deepen their understanding of coastal and marine habitats such as coral reefs and mangroves, the RS Staff conducted a field trip to Siladen and Bunaken islands as part of a team-building activity. At the islands, staff went snorkeling to observe the coral reefs.

The staff also interacted with the community in Siladen, particularly women whose activities include gathering and peeling Indian almonds that grow in the area and using them to make a local delicacy called “halua,” similar to a candy bar, with brown palm sugar.

On Bunaken Island, staff observed a large amount of trash, mostly plastics carried by the currents. Exposure to these threats to the marine environment strengthened the staff’s resolve to support efforts to address marine litter problems in the CTI-CFF region.

Dr. Mohd Kushairi Mohd Rajuddin, Executive Director of the Regional Secretariat, also demonstrated proper safety and rescue procedures, especially during water activities such as boat trips, island observation, and snorkeling/diving.

This team-building activity is intended to be held annually to enhance staff appreciation of the CTI-CFF’s mission to protect and conserve marine and coastal resources while promoting camaraderie and team spirit.
