Internalizing Communication Strategies through the CTI-CFF Communication Workshop

Effective communication is vital for any organization's success, especially for multinational initiatives with diverse stakeholders. The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF) recognizes the importance of communication in achieving its conservation goals. To foster better collaboration and understanding among its members, a communication workshop was held on 25 July 2023 in Manado, made possible in part by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The workshop commenced with a presentation by the Communication and Information Manager of the CTI-CFF Regional Secretariat, who shared the CTI-CFF Communication Strategy annexed to the Regional Plan of Action (RPOA) 2.0.

Internalizing the communication strategy involves understanding specific behaviors and mindsets that strengthen CTI-CFF’s advocacy, education, and action initiatives. The mission is prioritized over the institution, emphasizing that the Coral Triangle is a region in crisis, affecting livelihoods and food security for many. CTI-CFF serves as the exclusive regional partnership of six countries taking concrete actions on the ground.

Participants gained valuable insights into the role of effective communication in advancing CTI-CFF’s mission. The presentation highlighted the importance of coordinated communication systems, robust platforms, and strategic goals to promote CTI-CFF as a leading multilateral partnership safeguarding some of the world’s most important marine resources.

Participants engaged in an intellectually stimulating discussion on country members' commitments to various aspects of communication. The focus included coordination systems, selection of communication platforms and channels, and the planned list of products for development in 2024. This discourse laid the foundation for cohesive efforts, ensuring that each country member aligned with the broader vision while maintaining their unique contributions.

Following the presentation, the workshop continued under the facilitation of Ms. Ariani Hasanah Soejoeti, Senior Communications and Outreach Specialist, SuFIA TS. Participants were divided into groups to engage in dynamic discussions and exercises focused on designing communication materials and understanding target audiences. Each group explored the institutions, avenues, and channels of communication used by their respective partner organizations. These discussions proved highly fruitful, as participants shared unique perspectives and best practices from their experiences, recognizing the importance of tailoring communication strategies to the specific needs of each partner organization for more impactful engagement.

The workshop concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and a strengthened commitment to effective communication within the CTI-CFF framework. Attendees departed equipped with a deeper understanding of strategic communication, poised to drive positive change through harmonious and impactful collaboration.
