The German Government is supporting the 3.5-million-hectare Savu Sea Marine National Park (MNP) in East Nusa Tenggara in line with the Indonesian government’s commitment to expand its marine conservation area to 20 million hectares by 2020 and to help achieve the goals of the Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF). German support is channeled through the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety’s (BMU) International Climate Change Initiative. It facilitated the establishment of the Savu Sea Marine National Park in May 2009 and has played a key role in promoting active participation and engagement of all stakeholders in marine park management—from the national government to provincial and community levels.

This collaboration involves the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Regional Government of East Nusa Tenggara Province, the Regional Legislative Council of the province, 13 regencies or municipalities and their respective Regional Legislative Councils, as well as international NGOs such as TNC and WWF. Local NGOs, community organizations, fisheries industries, universities, and other stakeholders are also involved. The project has built and supported the capacity of the Tim Pengkajian, Penetapan, dan Perancangan Pengelolaan Kawasan Konservasi Perairan Laut Sawu (Team for Study, Determination, and Management Planning of the Savu Sea MPA), a multi-stakeholder forum established through a provincial government decree to support the establishment and management of the marine park.
